Foam Roller for Back Extension

This foam rolling exercise is designed to reduce upper and mid-back tension while improving posture by restoring mobility to the thoracic spine. Place the foam roller anywhere along your back that feels stiff, tight, or like it could use some extra attention, spending a little extra time on restricted areas while breathing slowly and deeply. If you don't have a foam roller, you can use common household items such as a tightly rolled towel, firm pillow, or rolled yoga mat to create gentle pressure.

Hours spent sitting at a desk, driving, or looking down at a phone often lead to a rounded upper back (hyperkyphosis), forward shoulders, and forward head posture (anterior head carriage). This exercise helps reverse those positions by encouraging thoracic extension—the opposite movement of prolonged sitting—making it easier to stand taller, improve spinal mobility, and reduce strain on the neck and upper back. Foam rolling provides both passive and active myofascial release to decrease muscle tension, improve tissue flexibility, and promote healthier movement. This exercise can be performed daily as part of a mobility routine, before activity to improve movement quality, or after exercise to aid recovery.
